biography

The film industry has always been a part of Colden's life, avoiding it was nearly impossible. His mother, Alice Smith, won the hearts of many in her countless big screen roles over the years spanning her career. Before she had even thought about having a family, her life revolved around acting. She was called a chameleon of her time, and the public could never guess what role she would be taking on next. It was through her work that she met Robert Smith, who happened to be directing the film she was staring in. They fell in love almost instantly it seemed, were married within the year, and a year after that she was turning down roles because she found herself pregnant with her first and only child.

Growing up, Colden had always been asked what it was like to be raised in a family so heavily embedded in the industry, but it was a question he never had the answer for. Perhaps if he had ever known anything other than it, he would have a better idea; but it was all he had known his whole life. He spent much of his childhood on his mother or father's sets, going to school when he could and being taught by a tutor when he couldn't. At the age of nine his parents separated and filed for divorce soon afterward, and this news didn't go over so well for their son. While divorce was becoming more and more common, it still alienated Colden from some of the people he knew, and he took it badly. Needing a change of scenery, Alice picked up and moved her and Colden to the United Kingdom, having a hand at some theatre work there instead of her usual roles in front of a camera. This was more than okay by Colden who had cut off contact with his father by that point, blaming the man (perhaps unfairly so) for the ruined relationship his parents sported. It would take years for them to start speaking again without his mother forcing him to call his father, which she did often no matter how much he protested.

At the age of seventeen, Colden and his mother moved back to Los Angeles. With a few half assed independent films made with friends and schoolmates under his belt, once Colden was of age, he enrolled in film school. Growing up on movie sets had its perks; he already knew many of the things he was taught and could treat much of it as a refresher course. Only a short way into his education there, his father used his many influences in the business and allowed Beetlejuice to fall into his son's lap. While he still wasn't on the best of terms with his father, Colden knew better than to pass up the opportunity just out of spite, and dove in headfirst. While Colden knew that it was allowed to fall into his lap because no one else would touch it, he didn't let that stop him and gave it his all, and much to his amazement: it worked.

It was on the job of Edward Scissorhands, which came soon after Beetlejuice, that he met Lina Bordeaux, who was cast in the leading role of 'Kim'. From there Colden's filmmaking career took off, partly out of pure luck that his first major motion picture became popular (although it would become even more popular later on after people started considering it a cult classic), but with even more credit to his father, who was there every step of the way, a move which helped mend their relationship in the long run.

As Colden started to work on other projects, basking in what was his quickly blossoming career, he and Lina began dating. Their relationship went slowly at first, as they weren't always at the same place at the same time and had to compromise everything to see one another, but eventually it became more and more serious. Years later they were married. She was a passionate person, headstrong and outgoing, which was what drew him to her. He, being rather laid back and generally a level headed and calm type of man, felt that she balanced him out well, and she did. Quite some time into their marriage she became pregnant and gave birth to their son, Jacob, in 2002.

At first things were great, they made sense as a family and it was obvious that both parents fell in love with the boy they shared together. But eventually things turned sour, as they so often do, and what might have been considered normal healthy arguments between couples turned into serious all out fights. The traits which made them fit together when they first met managed to turn against them. After countless explosive fights, many of which were very public and spread across the tabloids at the time, they filed for divorce.

Colden took it difficultly, needless to say. He had never been a fan of the press or tabloids and generally tried to avoid them as best he could, but the end of their relationship was highly publicized (even more so than their relationship was when they were together) and managed to make everything worse for him. He dove even further into his work - which was saying something as he already worked himself hard - and let his personal life spiral a little out of control (which naturally didn't help matters, press-wise). Custody of Jacob was split equally between he and Lina, his son staying with him every other week. Eventually he got his life on track, although he faked it well enough when he was taking care of his son during those months of difficulty. Lina and Colden stay in contact and act as civilly as possible for the sake of their son, although arguments have been frequent enough still over the past two years since they separated.
